Christmas Funny

Hee hee hee, this is brilliant.

Found via Ace of Spades

Right, enough silliness. Tomorrow I'm off to Brugge.

Happy Christmas!

Is everyone having a good Christmas?

I'm having a very merry Christmas. I have been visited by Father Christmas, and I have tasted the figgy pudding. It tasted like fruit and booze.

The Christmas pudding is made with a very rich cake, stuffed with fruit (presumably figs) and then soaked in cooking sherry. You steam it for an hour, so it cooks off, but it leaves a pretty strong flavor behind. There's also a warning about putting it in the microwave, as the pudding could catch fire. Which I thought was funny. I don't remember the exact wording, but it went something like this:

Warning: This pudding might spontaneously combust when exposed to high temperatures.

We went down to London and went to the Christmas festival in Hyde Park. I bought some beautiful German ornaments carved out of wood and reeds. I also got a crepe stuffed with cherries and nutella, which tasted amazing. I love eating something hot out of your hands when your walking around in the cold. It seems so wintery. They also had ice skating, but it was sold out.

That's okay. I've never been ice skating, but given my roller skating experiences I'd guess I'd spend most of it falling on my backside.

After the park we went to a Japanese noodle house called "Wagamamas" and I had some amazing Ramen. Before this, Ramen was the super cheap meal you ate in college. But this Ramen came with chicken, fish, tofu, spinach and a pickled something or other on the top. It was pink and white, but it didn't taste like a radish. You ate it with chop sticks and this enormous wooden spoon. Seriously, the thing was more like a ladle than a spoon. The tables were community tables, and the girl next to me would load up her spoon, and then just chew stuff off the front end. I couldn't quite manage that without spilling soup all over me, so I would sip the broth off the side of the spoon, and eat the noodles and meat with my chopsticks.

We stayed at a very nice hotel which had a full English breakfast in the morning.

Other than that I've been enjoying the English countryside. I've been helping my friends get ready for Christmas, making cookies, dropping off neighbor gifts, and playing Santa.

Last night we attended an Anglican Christmas Eve service in the little village church. The church was built sometime in the 1300s, so it was really beautiful, and really cold. There were readings and Christmas carols I had never heard before. After communion they passed out candles, turned off the lights, and we sang "Angles we have heard on high" to candlelight.

It was really fun. Although the highlights were probably when the bats woke up (It's so medieval! Stone work, large creaky doors, stained glass, bats, it was awesome.) And when my friend accidentally set her hair on fire during the service.

Father Christmas even managed to find me, and brought me the DVD of Hogfather, which I've really wanted, and some cool Warcraft goodies. He also brought me Haribo gummies, which just seem to taste better when they're eaten out of German packaging.

Corbeau's Holiday Travel Adventure

My flight from Reagan left bright and early at 6:35, so I was at the airport at 5. Unfortunately, so we're all the people who had been trapped there on Friday from the ice storms. It was crazy. I've never seen such a crowd at the airport. A little after 6 I managed to get my bag checked and booked it to the terminals.

The last time I ran in an airport was when I was 16 and we were trying to make a connection at O'Hare. That experience led to my traveler's creed of "Never EVER connect through O'Hare, even if they reroute you through Detroit."

Anyway, I managed to make my flight, only to sit for 20 minutes on the tarmac at JFK, which was still icy and nasty. Since I only had an hour layover, this was a little stressful. Finally they took us to one of those walkways outside, because the wait for a gate would be another 40 minutes. I walked carefully across the ice, but once inside, the race was ON!

You should have seen me. I made excellent time, especially on those moving walkways. I made it to the international terminal just as my flight was boarding, so I even had time for the bathroom. That's how fast I was.

I was so proud of myself for making that connection.

Oh yes I was.

And then we sat inside the plane, on the tarmac, for the next five hours.

FIVE. FREAKING. HOURS.

Forget waterboarding, we should stick terrorists in an enclosed space with a looping Christmas mix until they attempt to break their own eardrums.

At first the baggage cart was delayed because of the ice. Then there was a light out in the cockpit. It's the light that let's the pilot know that the landing gear is down, so it was an important light. But it took two hours to change out. Something about removing a panel.

Then we had to wait for the de-icing truck, which took another few hours. And by the time we finally go de-iced, we couldn't take off because London Heathrow has a very strict curfew and no planes can land between midnight and 6. So they had to file new paperwork which would take another hour and a half.

Fortunately at this point they let us off the plane. Which was good because I starting to freak out. Between the music, the screaming baby (the plane wasn't even moving! What were they doing to that kid to make it scream for hour after hour?) and the fascinating odours coming from the guy in front of me I was starting to lose it.

After we got back into the terminal they gave us free meal vouchers so could have lunch, and then they decided that we would just wait until Heathrow opened again, another 5 hours. But at least we spent those hours in the terminal, where they have tv, and ice cream, and leg room.

We got back on the plane at 6. We were supposed to leave at 6:30, but had to wait another hour for the de-icing truck, apparently the only one for the entire wretched airport.

So my flight, which was supposed to leave at 8:55 am, took off at 7:45 pm.

My new travel motto is, "Never travel on 3 hours of sleep, no matter how many times your friends tell you that you can sleep on the plane."

Hopefully BSA fared better, although the last time I heard from her, she was stuck in Baltimore.

Ninja Holiday Report

Tomorrow I fly to England where I will spend the next two weeks trying to figure out just what a "figgy pudding" is.

This holiday trip is so awesome that it has warped the space-time continuum, causing every clock in my office to tick by in an agonizing crawl.

But at last I'm home and the holiday has begun! Since I'm leaving I've had local and family Christmas early, with roommate Christmas tonight.

I've had a bath with some of my new bath oils, and now I'm watching The Dark Knight and eating Christmas chocolates.

The blog will be slow for the next couple of weeks. Enjoy your holidays and I hope to have lots of new stories to tell when I get back.

7 on 1

Tonight in Krav, we did a mass attacker drill that featured 7 people with pads keeping 1 person in the center. Once the person in the middle fought free of the circle, they then had to fight off each of the 7 people.

And then reset and do it again.

I did pretty good the first time around, but on the second I had a hard time fighting free of the circle. Eventually the mass broke around a pole and I was able to slip out.

The odd thing was, about 30 seconds after I finished I was on my way to mass around the next victim, I had this sudden huge stitch in my side. I actually bent over and lost my mouthpiece.

It was dramatic enough that the instructor checked on me.

I really need to work on my endurance.

At last!!

We have Gambit in an X-men movie.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Wolverine. But Gambit is hot in the movie AND in the comics.

Monday AMV -blerghhhh

Did everyone have a good weekend? I've eaten so many goodies that just the thought of sugar cookies makes me feel a little ill.

Speaking of sugar cookies, I was at a friends Christmas party, and everyone was opening their gifts all at once. I was working through mine methodically, based on shape and size.

I opened a tin, and it was full of all kinds of homemade cookies. I tried one. Hmmm, delicious. The next present was a plastic Christmas pail. I popped the lid and pulled out a bag full of little sugar cookies in the shape of moons.

"Cool!" I thought. I immediately opened the bag and popped one into my mouth. The first thing I noticed was that the cookies were dusted in flour, not powdered sugar. It also had a weird texture and taste.

"Eww" I thought, putting the lid back on. "I'll just take those home and toss 'em."

Just then I heard someone call out "The stuff in the pail is homemade pasta. Not sugar cookies! So you probably don't want to eat them right now."

"Good thing you warned us" a guy called out, "I was just about to eat some."

I just nodded vigourously. "Phew, warned just in time."

Today's video is from Band of Brothers, an HBO mini-series that's equal parts awe and heartbreak. Amazing stuff.

Party 1 Update

For anyone who wants to participate vicariously. :)

Let's see, the firm had little croissant sandwiches with pork and apple jelly inside, roast beef, sushi (bleah), crab dip, spinach/artichoke dip, with all sorts of fancy breads, and two towers of cream puffs, surrounded by chocolate truffles, like ancient worshipers at a pastry pyramid.

Since it's a law firm in DC, the talk was mostly about politics and the economy.

It was awesome.

Party 2 happens in a few hours. It's a breakfast party, so I kind of wish I had cute pajamas to wear to it. I guess flannel pants and a cute t-shirt will have to do.

Nuts I don't even have a Christmas t-shirt! I am totally unprepared for a Christmas breakfast party.

Holiday Parties!

The time of feasting has begun! Yesterday we had our office holiday party, and I have three more coming up over the weekend. Tis the season for overeating.

I ate a lot yesterday too, and then I went to Krav later that night and experienced something I like to call "Revenge of the Cheesecake."

I figured I'd be okay with a 6 hour digestion window, but we did endurance exercises, and those are always hard.

At one point I had to start doing girl push-ups. That always makes me feel like a sissy girl.

Monday AMV and The Cirque De Soleil

We put up our Christmas tree yesterday, so my house if officially ready for Christmas.

Friday I went with BSA to the Cirque De Soleil, which was really good, even though they held it at the National Harbor, which is only accessible by the Woodrow Wilson Bridge aka, the Bridge of Despair, and even though they charged 13 bucks for a popcorn and soda, and despite the ruthless pairing of extra salty popcorn with a strict no-refill policy on your souvenir cup.

CURSE YOU FRENCH-CANADIANS!!!!!! Vous etes des salles chameaux!!

But I digress. By the time we got off the Bridge of Eternal Torment the show had already started, so I missed the first act, but the rest was pure awesome.

Contortionists - freaky but beautiful. How does one become a professional contortionist anyway? What's that job interview like? Do you think she has "ability to sit on my own head" listed as a bullet point on her resume?

Yes, these were my thoughts, beyond "ew" and "Ahh!!" as I watched the contortionists do things no human body was ever meant to do. I can't help it.

If I could be anyone at the circus, I would be the trapeze girl. Not only does it look like tons of fun, but you get to have the super sassy attitude.

Volunteered by clowns = dire fate. Do not let this happen to you.

The High Wire guys were amazing. Not only did they walk across that sucker, they jump roped, rode bikes, and jumped over each other's heads. Although one did fall on that last one. He caught himself though, so it was all good.

During intermission we discovered the no refill policy, and toured the amazing masks that artists create for the circus.

The second half was dominated by something I can only describe as Spinning Wheels of DEATH. It was amazing, and the guys who perform on those things are crazy. Especially the one running on the outside!

Those are my highlights. There were beautiful things, amazing things, disturbing things, and a guy on stilts who performed a double back flip and nailed the landing.

It is definitely a show worth checking out.

Cool Ad

Watch a guy wakeboard in flooded Mark's Square.

I'm listening to The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke, which is set in Venice and has a rather important event happen in Mark's Square.

Very cool. Good book.

AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!

Holy Crap!!

I couple of weeks ago we bought tickets to Cirque De Soleil. Today I got the reminder email, and as I was perusing it I noticed that it was for the 4 o'clock show and not the 8 o'clock show.

NUTS!!

Monday AMV

I had two Thanksgivings this year and it was awesome! And now that we're into December, we can play Christmas music.
