Friday Funnies

Why ninjas drink milk:

This is what happens when you try to be Sarah Brightman:

I hate being lost. And so do these guys:

Heh. I once got lost in DC for three hours. Three FREAKING hours. And then I got my GPS.

Morning Excitement

Since I'm out of the whole education/vacation cycle, I know that summer is over when it stays dark as I drive to work.

It's hard to wake up when you're brain is convinced that it's still the middle of the night. Since it was so dark, I couldn't tell that it was overcast, and I wasn't awake enough to pay much attention to the weatherman's "light drizzle off and on all day" so I was caught completely unprepared when the heavens opened and dumped a wall of water on my car.

When there's that much water it pools on the road pretty quick, and then it sprays up as the cars pass through it, so you're getting splashed from above and below and you can't see a thing. You just have to line up behind the lights in front of you, and try not to veer.

"This is my lane. There are many like it, but this one is mine."

It was about this time that I realized that my umbrella was still at home. Sitting in my room.

Safe and dry.

Probably snuggled under the covers, reading a book and sipping hot chocolate.

Cure You Umbrella!! CURSE YOU!!!!!!!!!

Monday AMV- A tad early

I'm going to West Virginia for work (I know you're all jealous.) So I'm posting this a little early.

After all, the Monday AMV is the only running theme I've actually managed to stick to.

My friend at work is doing a research project on Palmistry. I had her look at my hand, and found out that due to my rectangular palms and short fingers, I have hands of FIRE!!!

Do you know what that means? I'm a Firebender! Hmmm, but which firebender...

Except without all the psychotic megalomania.

Sigh, I miss Avatar.

Dog Pile!

This week in Krav, we're focusing on ground fighting.
So my teacher says "Get in groups of 4!"
I find myself in a group with three guys.
The teacher says "3 of you get a kick shield"
My three partners, all being gentlemen, run to the back of the room to grab the big shields.

"Now" says the teacher "I'm going to impress upon you how much being on the ground sucks" and then we learned how to wiggle out of a dog pile.
"The person without the shield lays on the ground, then the three with kick shields lay the shields on you, then lay on top of it. One over your shoulders, one on your middle, one on your legs."

I looked nervous.

My three guys looked apologetic.

As I lay on the ground, the instructor continued to instruct, my guys got heavier, and I became concerned about breathing, until he finally gave us the go signal.

I'm sure it will come as a surprise to no one that I shot out of there like a greased weasel, bounced a few steps, then asked if someone would hand me my shoe back. I was also the first one out of all the groups to succeed in getting out.

That's what happens when you combine the simple mechanics of elevating and rolling the hips with the sheer mind numbing terror of claustrophobia.

Greased. Weasel. Power.

Restaurant Week: The Continuation

Sorry this is tardy, all these late nights are starting to get to me.

Wednesday we went to B. Smith's, which offers Southern food. It's located inside of Union Station, and this was the first time I had been inside. It was beautiful, the architecture reminded me a lot of the Library of Congress. Very ornate.

I got fried green tomatoes, the fried catfish which was really good. It had a honey-mustard sauce instead of tartar sauce, and it came with collard greens and mac and cheese.

For dessert there was a bread pudding that was okay. Not my favorite southern place, but it was pretty good. The fish was my favorite.

Thursday was my day off from restaurant week. I went to Krav to try and burn off some of the calories. We worked on elbows, and my partner was a large guy who refused to move back unless I pushed him really hard.

So the instructor was all "Use your body weight!" and I was slamming my elbows into his pad really hard over and over and over again until today, I have purple elbows.

Bruised elbows hurt alot more than you think they would. It's just a really odd place to be bruised.

Today we went to Bobby Van's, a very swank steakhouse. The kind of place where nice girls don't flash their purple elbows, so I had to find a nice, long sleeved shirt to wear.

I had gazpacho, which they made with avacado, filet mignon with smoky mashed potatoes and haricot vert (green beans) and topped it off with chocolate raspberry cake.

Our waitress served the dessert, and when she came back, the cake was gone and the plates were cleared, and my friends were eating the last of their cheesecake.

She was like, wow. I could bring you something else if you guys didn't really care for those.

Our waitress was funny.

For DFL

MadTV feels your pain:

Restaurant Week: Oya

Tuesday night we went to Oya, a Eurasian restaurant. It's actually a restaurant/bar/lounge, which means that while I was dressed in business casual, everyone else there was in nighttime going out/clubbing clothes. This, of course, violates the first law of the ninja.

First law of the ninja: Blend.

Anyway, I couldn't take pictures because the inside was really dark, and the tables were really close together, and I couldn't figure out a way of snapping a photo without getting 5 or 6 people angry at me.

I started off with a goat cheese salad, although the goat cheese wasn't actually in the salad. It was in this weird looking tart thing off to the side with candied something or other all over it. That I didn't care for.

The salad, just greens with some walnuts and a vinaigrette, was good.

For my entree I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass which was bland (and I really like Sea Bass, so this made my sad) but it came with stuffed red peppers that were good. So I give it an okay.

For dessert I ordered a banana bread pudding that made me wish I'd ordered the mousse.

So far, PS7 is the place to beat.

Tonight. B Smith's which features Louisianan/Cajun style cooking. HHHhhmmmmmm Blackened EVERYTHING.

Why I hate airlines

So it's 7:15 and I'm sitting in the office on hold with United when I'm supposed to be sitting at Oya enjoying Restaurant Week with TA and BSA. This is my second airlines call today, and so far I've been on hold with this call for 33 minutes. I won't bore you with the details, but basically yesterday I called United to change a very complicated flight which included combining two previous tickets into one new itinerary with stops in six cities. So they sorted everything out, emailed me a confirmation and everything, and then just didn't ticket the flight. So I, of course, got the phone call from a frantic employee in Boston because the airlines won't let them on the plane because he doesn't have a ticket. And to top it off, it's a codeshare flight operated by US Airways, and they just won't even touch it. Now I have to get on the phone with Air France to work out another flight, but they are so lovely they won't let you be on hold for more then 30 minutes, which doesn't mean they answer the call, they just disconnect you after 30 minutes and you have to call back. I love my life.

Restaurant Week: PS7

So last night we ate at PS7 in Chinatown. The restaurant is Fine American Dining, and they had some amazing seafood.

I went with a group of friends, and we sampled many appetizers. I got the smoked salmon wrapped around an endive (a fancy word for lettuce.)

I also got to sample my friends' tuna sliders, which featured spicy tuna tartare on little sesame onion buns, and some Prince Edward Island musells, which were cooked in an ale and mustard broth and were amazing. They were my favorite.

My entree was five spice grilled chicken breast, with black plum dumplings, served on cooked mushrooms. Hmmmmmmm,

and then for my awesome dessert, I got the chocolate cake.

The green spots were some sort of minty sauce (the problem with restaurant week is that by the time dessert comes around, you forget all the descriptions of the stuff that comes with it.) There was also that little spot of creamy thick pudding, which was perfect to offset the rich chocolate.

BSA also insisted that I take a picture of her beignets, (a fancy word for fried dough) served with chocolate and raspberry sauce.)

Restaurant Week!

It's Restaurant Week! It's Restaurant Week!! It's Restaurant WEEK!!!

Every time this happens I vow to blog it, and it has yet to happen, but this week, I WILL blog the food awesomeness that is Restaurant Week.

Restaurant Week happens when Congress breaks for a 5 week vacation and all the swanky restaurants in the area suffer a drop in business. So they offer a set menu, appetizer, meal, and dessert for 30 bucks. It's awesome.

Tonight... PS7.

It is still Monday though, so while I go enjoy some fine cuisine, here's the awesome popper battle from So You Think You Can Dance's finale:

Or even more awesome. . . the drummers from the Olympic Opening Ceremony

Cool New Music Site

So, my random last minute job for today was to find contemporary Moroccan music to accompany the presentation that we are making for a new hotel in Marrakech on Tuesday. My bosses are flying to Paris tomorrow to interview, so we're rushing through all the last minute details to get them out the door. In my quest for authentic Moroccan music, I found this totally awesome website. It basically allows you to search for music by any region and country, including some dude from Morocco named Driss El Maloumi who plays the oud (pronounced ooood, like food without the "f").

Anyway, check it out.

Only in DC

Me and my boy Thomas Jefferson, hanging out at the new Nationals Stadium.

Good Food Tuesday

Apple Dip

1 (8 oz) pkg of cream cheese
1/4 c sugar
3/4 c brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 T. caramel ice cream topping

Beat cream cheese, sugars, vanilla, and caramel together until creamy. Slice apples and serve with dip.

I tried this one because it was short and easy. It's also ridiculously tasty. I doubled the caramel, because I LOVE caramel. It's really good, and really rich. It makes a lot, so you could probably half this recipe.
